United's club badge
an illustrated history
1972-1975 Umbro
United first featured a club crest on their shirts for the 1972/73 season and they remained unchanged until Admiral's contract to supply the club's kit began.

1975-1980 Admiral
Admiral made subtle changes to the club crest during the five years they provided kits to United. Perhaps the cleverest was the introduction of football boots rather than scrolls above the team name, which first appeared in the 1979/80 season.

The club badge on the adidas produced shirts continued to feature boots rather than scrolls abovethe team name, although the German manufacturer added their trademark three stripes to the boots. The club crest was enlarged from the 1984/85 season to empasise the adidad branded boots.

1992-2002 Umbro
The club badge remained largely unchanged although Umbro used various mounts in the decade as kit supplier. Perhaps the most controversial decision was dropping the words 'Football Club' from the crest in 1998/99.

Nike produced nearly as many varieties of the club badge as they did shirts in the thirteen years as kit supplier. We have included only a small selection.

Beneath the badge
Nike included an inspirational message on the inside of the shirts immediately beneath the club badge for the first time for the 2010/11 season. The detail was also included on the replica shirts. The word "Believe" was printed into the inside of the shirt. Contributor Daryl Sivakumaran sent this photo of Chicharito's shirt worn in the Champions League game against Marseilles.
United's shirts featured the word "Relentless" printed into the inside of the shirt for the 2011/12 season.

Most of the photographs of match worn shirts have been taken by Tim, although we are also grateful to mufc shirts, Mike Fowler, Paul Jolleys and Mike Dixon for allowing us to use photographs from their collections.
