Although United never played in this kit it is often wrongly attributed as a United kit.

This is probably because of a photograph of Bobby Charlton playing in the kit has been reproduced in several books on the club.

In fact the kit was worn by the FA XI in the FA Charity Shield match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on 12th August 1961.

The Charity Shield traditionally featured the League Champions against the FA Cup winners, but Tottenham's League and Cup double in 1960/61 meant this was impossible.

As an alternative Tottenham faced an FA XI side that featured United's Bobby Charlton.

Spurs won the game 3-2 in front of a crowd of almost 40,000.
