United's actual kit

We do not feature many kits from testimonial games played away from Old Trafford but we are making an exception for John Whelan's testimonial.

John Whelan was the brother of Liam', one of the victims of the Munich Air Crash in 1958. His testimonial game, played at Dalymount Park in Dublin on August 4th 1968, was between United and a Drumcondra Selectt XI.

According to John White's 'Manchester United Miscellany'(published by Carlton Books in 2005) United wore an all green kit for the game.

We had been unable to find any evidence of the claim until contributor Sean Moran found definitive proof that United wore their normal home kit in this game. Many thanks Sean.

Sean has sent a couple of links to Facebook pages that have photos from the game.

Bobby Charlton and John Mathews tussle for possession

Incidentally United won 2-1 with both goals coming from Denis Law.
