Law was a natural goal scorer with lightning reflexes, and was hugely influential in the United side that won two League titles, the FA Cup and European Cup in the Sixties (although Law missed the European Cup Final in 1968 through injury).

He scored 49 goals during the 1963/64 season, a club record, and won the coveted European Player of the Year, the only Scotsman to receive this honour. His goal rate, at better than a goal every two games, marks Law as one of the best finishers to have played at United, a fact that few who saw Law in his pomp would argue against.

Denis Law first came to Busby's attention as a youth player at Huddersfield Town in 1956, although his efforts to sign the player were rebuffed. In August 1962 Busby paid a new club record fee of £110,000 to sign the 'Lawman' from Torino. He had previously set British record fees when sold to Manchester City (in March 1960) and Torino (in June 1961).

Given a free transfer by Tommy Docherty in summer 1973, Law joined Manchester City on a one year contract. He made his final League appearance in April 1974, ironically against United at Old Trafford, scoring the only goal of the game with a back heel. He played twice for City in the Texaco Cup the following August, scoring his last goal at Bramall Lane, before retiring at the end of the month.
